Edward And Charlotte Vollbrecht Hewitt

d. July 7, 2017

Edward Paul Hewitt, age 94 and his beloved wife, Charlotte Irene (Vollbrecht) Hewitt, age 89, both passed away peacefully 2 hours apart on Friday July 7, 2017 at Pleasant Ridge Manor, surrounded by their loving family.

As in life, now in death, they are together forever.  They went to be with the Lord together this past Friday. A true love story even in death.  Ed and Charlotte celebrated this week in heaven their 58th wedding anniversary on July 11th. They had a wonderful life together and have shown us in marriage your heart becomes one.

Edward was born in Erie on August 13, 1923, a son of the late John and Mary Sippola Hewitt.  Charlotte was born in Saegertown on February 4, 1928, a daughter of the late Carl Vollbrecht and Florence Fox Adams Vollbrecht.

Ed graduated from East High School in 1941.  He was drafted in the U.S Army Medical Corps- the 341st.  Ed was awarded two bronze stars for bravery under fire.  He furthered his education at General Electric as a specialist in manufacturing engineer.  He accepted a position with the Pittsburgh-Conneaut Dock Co. as an industrial engineer until his retirement in 1992.  Ed was a member of Tyrian Lodge #362 F.& A.M.  Ed sang with Erepo Grotto and Consistory choirs.

Charlotte graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1946 went on to work at Erie Technological Products.  She then went to work at General Electric for 14 years, where she met the love of her life and was able to retire to become a full time homemaker. In 1973, Charlotte became a volunteer at Pleasant Ridge Manor West, continuing there until health concerns in 2009.  She was very proud of the 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award she received from the Pennsylvania Association of County Affiliated Homes.

Both were members of Lakewood United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the folk choir there.  Ed was also an usher.

Ed and Charlotte both loved camping, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends, but most importantly – with each other.  Ed also enjoyed hunting, golf, singing and woodworking.  Charlotte loved photography and writing letters to family and friends but will be fondly remembered for her pies.

In addition to both their parents, they are preceded in death by Ed’s brother, John Richard and his sister, Catherine Smith; and Charlotte’s half-brothers, Melvin and Louise Adams.

Charlotte and Ed are survived by their two daughters, Janice Munn and her husband John of North Venice, FL and Kristine Budny and her husband Greg of Erie; three grandchildren, Lindsay (Mike) Lambert, Jonathan (Jamie) Munn, all of Florida and Katelynn Budny of Erie.  They are further survived by a great granddaughter Isabella Grace Lambert, as well as many nieces, nephews.
