Leo Schauerman

December 24, 1917 — November 14, 2018

Leo Joseph Schauerman, age 100, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2018. He was born in Erie on December 24, 1917 to Joseph and Emma (Schwarz) Schauerman and spent most all of his life in Erie, PA.

He was a very proud graduate of Academy High School, class of 1936. During WWII he was a Lieutenant in the US Army and was stationed at air bases in Natal, Brazil and on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Leo was an award winning agent with the Prudential Insurance Company for many years.  He excelled in all sports, especially basketball, baseball and golf and was a member of many championship teams. As a spectator, he was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.   He had numerous “holes-in one” on the golf course and enjoyed many hours on the links especially at Lawrence Park Golf Club where he was an original member of the Dirty Dozen golf group and at Six Lakes Golf Club in Ft. Myers, FL.

He loved to tell stories about his life and with his amazing memory the story was always complete with specific details and names. He also loved big band music and was a fabulous dancer. Leo served as a Trustee and Elder at Elmwood United Presbyterian Church and he belonged to the Erie Maennerchor and Zukor Clubs for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, Jean MacInnes Schauerman, Lucille Boag Schauerman, Charlotte Viehdeffer Schauerman and a sister, Martha Stoops (Clyde).

He is survived by a daughter, Janis Schauerman Arnold (Doug) of Pittsburgh, PA, a son Chris Schauerman (Kim) of Johns Creek, GA and four grandchildren: Emily Arnold Evans (Nathaniel), Bradley Arnold, Christopher Schauerman, Katie Schauerman and two great-grandchildren, Rory and Jackson Evans.

He is further survived by a step-daughter, Susan Vogt (James) and two stepsons, James Viehdeffer and Dr. William Viehdeffer (Sandy), step grandchildren, Brian, Heidi, Dacian & Aaron Vogt and Laura, Christy and Paula Veihdeffer and several step great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, 602 W. 10th Street, on Saturday November 24th from 10am to 11am. The funeral service and burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery will be private.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at St. Mary’s Asbury Ridge and Concordia Fox Chapel for their loving care during the past few years.
