Robert Smith

August 18, 1927 — May 12, 2018

Robert E. Smith passed away quietly on May 12th, 2018 in Girard, PA, following a two year illness.  Robert was born in 1927, in Portland, ME, to Charles I. Smith Sr. and Edith Hayes Smith, the fifth of their seven children.  He attended Portland local schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1945.

He served in the Navy during the end of World War II.  After the war, Robert was employed by Cummings Brothers and McGowan Educator Company in Maine and also worked for Greeland & McCullough in Boston, MA.  Bob then started a 38-year career with Sprague and Henwood, Inc. a core drilling contractor for construction and mining projects. Bob started as a laborer on their Maine Turnpike project in 1953 and rose through the ranks to become a Contract Representative/Superintendent, working out of the Scranton, PA, home office. Among his most interesting projects were five summers spent managing the drilling operations for clients involved in mineral exploration north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

Robert enjoyed gardening, woodworking, going for walks, helping his neighbors, and spending time with his children and grandkids.

On May 4, 1954, Robert married Doris MacDermaid of Portland, ME, in Angola, IN.  Early on, Robert and Doris traveled the country with his work and lived in over 50 different locations. For the final 23 years of his career, Robert and Doris lived in Clarks Green, PA, and neighboring Clarks Summit, PA, before returning to Maine to retire on Long Lake in the town of Naples.

Robert and Doris were blessed with two children, a son, Richard Alan Smith, and a daughter, Kimberly Smith Allen.  Robert has five grandchildren: Kathleen Smith and Chris, Cody, Erin, and Shannon Allen.  Robert was very proud of the education and accomplishments achieved by all, telling everyone that he didn’t have quantity, but he had quality!

Robert was reunited by his sister with a girlfriend he dated in 1948, years after Doris’ passing.  On March 12, 2005, Robert was married to Jacquelyn Teeter in Cullman, AL.  For years, they did the “snowbird” thing, traveling between the houses in Naples, ME and Cullman, AL. Through Jackie, Robert was blessed with step-children Stephanie McDonnell, Robin Miller, Tracy Stephans, and Eric Teeter.  He was blessed to have a total of 11 step-grandchildren, 14 step-great grandchildren and one step great great grandson.

He is also survived by two sisters, Edith Roma of Westbrook, ME, and Louise DiPaulo of Bar Mills, ME, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris; three brothers, Lockhart, Charles Jr., and Harold; and sister, Kay Bicknell.
