Samuel Greenaway

October 30, 1930 — January 1, 2024

Samuel J. Greenaway age 93, of Fairview, PA passed peacefully away on Monday, January 1, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 30th, 1930, the son of the late Elizabeth (Whiteford) and Albert Greenaway. He was the youngest of five children; Clara, Albert, Tom, Betty, and Sam. Oh the love they shared and the many shenanigans they got up to. Sadly they are all gone now.

Sam married Nancy Wersing in 1950. He loved to say he married the “prettiest girl in Pittsburgh!” Sam and Nancy had five children, Jimmy, Karen, Danny, Nancy, and Susie, who enjoyed their life with an adventurous dad and loving mom. The family lived in Pittsburgh, PA until they moved to Erie, PA about 1954. They moved to Versailles, OH in 1981 where they made some wonderful friends and enjoyed an amazing community there for almost 20 years. Sam loved to spend the winters in Florida with Nancy where they made more tremendous friendships.

Samuel proudly served in the U. S. Army 82nd Airborne Division from 1948 to 1952 as a paratrooper. He had amazing work ethics and an entrepreneur spirit resulting in establishing two businesses; Holiday Meat Packing Company in Erie, PA and Whiteford Foods in Versailles, OH. Samuel was also a founding member of Holy Cross Church; spending many an hour with renovations and cooking in the kitchen (best mother-daughter communion dinners ever by those men of the Holy Name Society).

Besides his parents and siblings Samuel was preceded in death by his son Jim Greenaway, grandson Sammy Greenaway, daughter-in-law Barbara Greenaway, and daughter-in-law Ellen Greenaway.

Samuel is survived by Nancy A. Greenaway, his wonderful wife of 73 years; Karen Lipinski and her husband Mark of Lexington, SC; Dan Greenaway of Port Charlotte, FL; Nancy Johnson and husband Chris of Fairview, PA; and Susan Greenaway of Fairview, PA. He is further survived by 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was beloved by all and had a special connection with each and every one of them.

Sam is remembered as a family-oriented, generous, and hard-working man. He loved his family. He was always willing to lend a hand to all of us no matter what the project. He didn’t see problems, he saw only opportunities. Having a sharp mind with math, he was a card shark. He loved fishing, golfing, playing pool, and spending time with his family and friends.

A special thank you goes out to the caregivers and our village of friends who assisted his family during his final months. Sam shared his humor, quick wit, and made them feel like one of the family.

Family and friends may call at Holy Cross Church 7100 W. Ridge Rd, Fairview, PA 16415 on Friday January 5th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Family and friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday January 6th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church. A family burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, West Ridge 3801 W. 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506.

Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Church, Interim Healthcare Hospice 2633 W. 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505, or charity of choice.
