Steward Parlin

d. January 10, 2019

Steward Parlin died in Erie, PA, on January 10, 2019.  He was ninety-one years old.  He was born in Trenton, NJ, to the late George Steward Parlin, and Dorothy Elcome Parlin.  His only sibling, Edward, died in his youth.  He grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ, where he played on the New Jersey state champion Glen Ridge High School football team.

He went to school at the University of Pennsylvania and then Harvard University, receiving a BS/Economics from the Wharton Business School and a LLB from the Harvard Law School.  He served briefly in the US Navy at the end of World War II.

He started his law career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City, and then went on to work as a tax counsel at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Bethlehem, PA.  Upon retiring, he did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and for the Sun Inn, in Bethlehem.

Steward was an avid and successful contract bridge player, accruing enough American Contract Bridge League points to become a Life Master.  He was also a stamp enthusiast who developed a starter set of Italian postage stamps gifted to him by his father into a comprehensive collection.

Steward married Muriel Anne Ruemmler in 1950.  They were married until her death in 2014.  Steward is survived by daughter Kathryn Elcome Parlin, her husband Al Bartsch, daughter Ruth Anne Parlin, son James Steward Parlin, married to Dr. Elisabeth Wadsworth Joyce, and grandchildren Carolyn Bartsch, Christopher Bartsch, Ursula Parlin, and Cyrus Parlin.

Steward split his time between his homes in Bethlehem and Silver Bay, NY, before moving to Erie to be closer to family members.  A memorial service will be held at Silver Bay this summer at a date yet to be determined.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506.  Send condolences at www.Burtonfuneralhome.com.
